Janam Afternoon Tea at Garfunkel’s

Sunday 15th January 2017 - 9:41:27 PM

There’s a new afternoon tea in town! Janam tea purveyor, Amy Dubin, is now hosting afternoon tea service at Garfunkel’s speakeasy (upstairs at 67 Clinton St. NYC – enter through The Burgary). Amy is an Indian tea expert and serves loose leaf teas exclusively from single-estates in India that can be selected by region or characteristic, as well as a selection of herbal teas. Afternoon tea includes unlimited tea servings, and you can try as many teas as you like. On my visit we tried white tea, black tea, and orange tea. Amy will also customize tea blends at your request. Wine, bubbles and spirits are available as well. The Garfunkel’s space is gorgeous, luxurious, and cozy, with comfortable velvet chairs. It’s a lovely place for tea with friends or private events, such as bridal showers.Inline image 1

The scones, served one per person, were accompanied by berry jam and clotted cream. One scone each ended up being perfect, since we were very full by the end of the tea! On the day I went, the featured sweets were brown butter cookies, flan topped with berries, mini lemon tarts, and chocolate pudding. All very tasty, but the rich and chewy cookies (made by Cookies by Roo) especially impressed me. The made-to-order savory sandwiches included Egg Salad on Wheat, Salmon on Pumpernickel, Chicken Curry Salad Tarts, and Cucumber on White. The menu can be viewed at this link. Everything was excellent, and I’m looking forward to returning! Reservations are strongly recommended. Afternoon Tea is a very reasonable $35 per person, unless there are live musicians, in which case it’s $50 per person. Event schedule is here. Afternoon tea is served Wed-Sun 12-5p (last seating 3:45).
