Peach and pineapple pie by Erica Cannady

After nine years of writing this blog, I finally got the opportunity to judge a pie contest!

I learned a lot about pies from this experience. A huge variety of flavors and textures can factor into the basic concept of a peach pie. Bakers incorporated rosemary, ginger, apples, almonds, lemon, citrus, nuts, and more! The one pictured with stars at the top of this post had pineapple in it too!

We tasted 23 pies! They were labelled by number and we had categories to grade them on, including aroma, color, filling flavor, crust and more. Ultimately this peach tart with blueberries by Karen Fodere took the top prize. Katie Franklin won second place and Wendy Moises won third place. Full coverage can be read here. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all of the participants! It was such a fun experience. Thanks especially to the fine folks at Riverview Farmer’s Market for the invitation to judge. I encourage Jersey City area residents to check out this lovely market. What a great community, and the view is amazing!
